Overview
The Rhode Island Hospital Comprehensive Stroke Center is dedicated to caring for patients suffering from stroke, cerebral hemorrhage and their related causes. This includes disorders such as carotid artery stenosis, cerebral steno-occlusive disease, aneurysms, arteriovenous malformations, Moya Moya disease and other diseases which can cause stroke.
Our program is affiliated with The Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University and is Joint Commission certified. Furthermore, we have been honored to be recognized as a Gold Plus/Target Stroke Center by the American Heart/Stroke Association, which is their highest designation.
Our team is composed of professionals from the Departments of Neurosurgery, Neurology, Interventional Neuroradiology, Emergency Medicine and Rehabilitation Medicine who work in close collaboration to provide the best care available for our patients.

3 hospitals recognized for stroke, diabetes care
Rhode Island Hospital, The Miriam Hospital and Newport Hospital have all received the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association’s Get With The Guidelines – Stroke Gold Plus Quality Achievement Award.
“This is the first room of its kind in the world. There’s no other hospital in the world that has this stroke surgery suite,” McTaggart said, referring to a new state-of-the-art suite located in the emergency department, instead of a different part of the hospital.

For Treating Severe Strokes, All Hospitals Aren’t Equal
People who suffer severe strokes here can avoid the worst if stricken within a 30-minute ambulance ride to Rhode Island Hospital, the region’s only comprehensive stroke-treatment facility.
Drs. Mahesh Jayaraman and Ryan McTaggart, interventional neuroradiologists at Rhode Island Hospital, led a recent study that evaluated stroke patient outcomes in Rhode Island as a result of changing the state’s transport rules and improving the stroke system of care.
‘It’s a dramatic increase in good outcomes by coming to the right hospital the first time,’ said Dr. Mahesh Jayaraman, who is the director of the Neurovascular Center at Rhode Island Hospital. ‘We recognize while most strokes are minor strokes there’s a subset of strokes that are severe strokes, maybe 20 percent or so.’"
