In the Department of Neurosurgery, we use Zeiss Microscopes with the latest technology built in. In addition to being a state of the art intraoperative microscope, the Zeiss we use incorporates direct vascular imaging using Indocyanine green dye (ICG).
Who can benefit
The Zeiss Surgical Microscope is extremely valuable in patients undergoing surgery on cerebral blood vessels, including brain aneurysms, arteriovenous malformations (AVMs), bypass surgery, among others. We also utilize this technology routinely for the evaluation of blood flow following carotid endarectomies.
How it works
There is a camera in the microscope. We can activate the camera while the anesthesiologist injects ICG and all of a sudden we can see the blood vessels flow, such as in the video below. What is also unique to what we have in our operating rooms is that each microscope is hooked up to large HD plasma displays, which are incredibly valuable for teaching.
