Endovascular Neurosurgery/Interventional Neuroradiology Fellowship
Endovascular Neurosurgery/Interventional Neuroradiology Fellowship
Introduction:
The Brown University Endovascular Neurosurgery/Interventional Neuroradiology Fellowship provides comprehensive training in the endovascular treatment of cerebrovascular pathology with the goals of educating physicians to be clinically excellent neurointerventionalists, strong patient advocates, and leaders within our field.
The fellowship is accredited by the Society of Neurological Surgeons (SNS) through its Committee on Accreditation of Subspecialty Training (CAST) program and offers broad exposure to all aspects of adult and pediatric neuroendovascular surgery. Areas of focus include stroke thrombectomy, treatment of ruptured and unruptured aneurysms, arteriovenous malformations, and arteriovenous fistulas of the brain and spine, management of steno-occlusive cerebrovascular disease and carotid stenosis, traumatic vascular injury, tumors of the CNS, and maxillofacial vascular abnormalities. In addition, our program also provides experience in clinical research, including participation in cutting-edge multi-center clinical trials and independent mentored research with our faculty members.
Services are provided at Rhode Island Hospital in a comprehensive, collaborative, and collegial environment between the Departments of Radiology, Neurosurgery, and Neurology. Over 1000 endovascular procedures are performed per year at Rhode Island Hospital, including >360 stroke thrombectomies and >120 aneurysm embolizations, providing excellent clinical exposure to trainees. We are privileged to have an excellent collaborative relationship with nationally recognized programs in neurosurgery, neurology, radiology, emergency medicine, and general surgery, providing our trainees with excellent opportunities for interdisciplinary education, clinical care, and research.
Fellowship Applicant Information:
Fellowship duration is typically 2 years unless candidates meet requirements previously established by CAST. (Include this link under CAST: Neuroendovascular Surgery Fellowship Information) In this scenario, the duration of the fellowship can be one year. We train one candidate each academic year.
Fellows in the Endovascular Neurosurgery/Interventional Neuroradiology Program at Brown are selected after a careful evaluation among a competitive applicant pool of candidates with medical degrees who have completed residencies in neurosurgery, neurology, or radiology. Consideration can be given on an individual basis to an enfolded fellowship for senior neurosurgical residents.
Candidates should be trained in one of the following:
1. Neurosurgery residency
2. Neurology Residency, plus either a stroke or critical care fellowship
3. Radiology residency, plus neuroradiology fellowship
Please note: Starting with the 2027-2028 academic year, we will be selecting candidates for the fellowship through the Neurointerventional Fellowship Match Process. (https://snisonline.org/matchapplicantinfo/)
