Tumors can arise within the spinal cord itself, (intramedullary) or below the dura surrounding the spinal cord (extramedullary).

In many cases, surgery is the first line treatment option for these tumors. Treatment of spinal cord tumors requires technical expertise and a multidisciplinary approach to tumor treatment.
