Biography

Background

Alexios G. Carayannopoulos, DO, MPH, FAAPMR, FAAOE is Chief of the new department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, and part of the Norman Prince Spine Institute Team with the Department of Neurosurgery at Rhode Island Hospital and Newport Hospital. He is a clinical professor of neurosurgery at The Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University. He is board certified in both physical medicine and rehabilitation, as well as in pain medicine. Prior to joining Rhode Island Hospital, Carayannopoulos was the medical director of the Spine Center within the Department of Neurosurgery at Lahey Hospital and Medical Center in Burlington, Massachusetts, and medical director of the Lahey at Emerson Spine Program at Emerson Hospital in Concord, Massachusetts. He has a national reputation as a leader in both interventional spine and pain medicine. He is also a Navy Veteran having served 12 years as a Navy Diver and Submarine Officer.

He serves on several national and international committees including the American Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, the American Society of Regional Anesthesia and Pain Medicine, and the American Society of Interventional Pain Physicians, the North American Neuromodulation Society, and the International Neuromodulation Society where he chairs a committee. He is on the editorial board of multiple internationally recognized pain and rehabilitation peer reviewed journals. He is a consultant in spinal cord stimulation and works with both academia and industry to advance the field of neuromodulation through research and education. He is actively involved in clinical research and serves as the Principal Investigator on numerous neuromodulation studies, as well as studies using EEG in chronic pain patients to, neuro-biologic mediators in chronic pain and PTSD, and use of orthotics in rehabilitation medicine.

Carayannopoulos serves on many local committees through his advocacy work at the Rhode Island state house with a goal of helping to educate the community on non-opioid ways to treat pain. He was also appointed by Governor Gina Raimondo to serve on the Board of Medical Licensure and Discipline for the State of Rhode Island. He has appeared in numerous local and national television, radio, and newspaper stories as an expert in rehabilitation and pain medicine including Providence Business News, Providence Journal, NBC-10 local news, WPRI News, Newport Daily News, NBC National News Health.

Carayannopoulos earned his medical degree from Nova Southeastern University in Ft. Lauderdale, and completed his residency at Harvard Medical School and Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital in Boston and a fellowship at Dartmouth Medical School and Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, New Hampshire. He also earned a master of public health from Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore. Additionally, he is a Harvard-trained medical acupuncturist and a U.S. Navy-trained specialist in diving medicine and radiation health.
